My VOLUNTEER

Work

The Thanet Iceberg project has an initiative called The Kitchen CT9.  I spend some time volunteering with this organisation and I am in awe of the work they do to support the local community.

My work with The Kitchen CT9

I spent some time volunteering with this organisation to help with initial building works and provided support on the grand opening day.

I worked some shifts collecting surplus food from local supermarkets and also did some shift work in the Café behind the counter and in the kitchen.

I am looking forward to my next volunteer session.

The Charity

The key concept of The Kitchen is to build community over the dinner table in a relaxing and welcoming environment overlooking the English Channel.

The Kitchen is a community café that offers meals to the public at a "need price" and a "want price".   This allows the less well-off to have meals that are affordable to them and the more well-off customers are asked to contribute a little more for the meal they have.

The meals are made using food surplus from major supermarkets and wholesalers. This is not food that has gone past its "use by date" or "sell by date" but rather food that supermarkets may have a surplus of or a warehouse that had an order reduced for products and it resulted in a surplus that would otherwise go to waste.

A key aim of The Kitchen initiative is to fight food waste and local food poverty by building community through the simple act of sitting down to share food together.

The Kitchen is 100% reliant on donations and both financial and in-person.

It has been my pleasure to help The Kitchen in its early stages of renovation and I look forward to contributing further to this fantastic initiative.
